Vacations Are Good for Your Health

Vacations Are Good for Your Health

As an American, when was the last time you traveled outside the United States? Or your home state for that matter? Have you ever traveled abroad? If not, what's stopping you?

Did you know that taking a vacation is actually good for your health? I'm not talking about traveling for business; that's not a vacation. I'm talking about letting everything go and vacationing for adventure, fun, and relaxation.

I read an ABC article recently about a survey that they conducted this year. It stated that following: 1 in 10 Americans have never left their home state, 54% have visited 10 or less US states, 40% have never left the country, 30% have not bought a new luggage in 6 or more years, and 13% of Americans have never flown in an airplane.

Most studies agree that when asked "why" to the lack of traveling, the main reason is cost. So, in this post, not only am I going to tell you the health benefits of vacationing more, but I'm also going to show you a way to vacation for cheaper.

Most articles you read about encouraging people to travel abroad focuses on Europe. I highly recommend that you do not restrict yourself to one extra continent. Part of the health of traveling is to visit outside your own culture. So, for a healthier life, try stepping outside your comfort zone.

Health and well-being benefits of taking a vacation:
  • Reduced Risk of Heart-Related Deaths
    • A study conducted by the Global Commission on Aging and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that women who vacation at least twice a year show a significantly lower risk of a heart attack than those who only travel every six years or more. Men who do not vacation annually show a 20% higher risk of death and 30% higher risk of heart disease.
  • Relieves Stress
    • According to one study, to relieve stress, a prescription of at least 3 days of vacation is required. Physical complaints, quality of mood and sleep improves as well. The effects last for five weeks afterward. Sure, you might encounter some stress while waiting at the airport, but when you get to your destination, it will be so worth it! You get to recharge and start again.
  • Reduces the Risk of Depression
    • According to a study from the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin, women who vacation at least twice a year are less likely to suffer from depression and chronic stress. It helps you to learn to love life again.
  • Increases Happiness and Satisfaction
    • According to a Cornell University study, happiness and satisfaction increase from the planning stage of the trip to the vacation itself. Just think about it.
  • Strengthen Bonds
    • According to a study by the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services, women who took vacations were more satisfied with their marriages. Spending time enjoying life with your loved ones builds lasting bonds and priceless memories.
  • Enhanced Creativity
    • A number of studies were conducted at Columbia Business School to research the link between international travel and creativity. Creativity is enhanced by multicultural engagement, immersion, and adaptation.
  • Job Performance
    • With the increased quality of life from vacationing for at least 3 days, comes increased work performance, as well. Vacationing helps alleviate burnout and lack of creativity.
